Michigan Tourism

Ah, the state that looks like a hand. Ask anyone who’s lived there or who was born there, that’s how they look at the state too. While this might seem like a simple way to view the state, it’s also pretty reasonable when you think about the tourism of the area. The sights and the attractions in the state are simple and easy to point out. All you need to do is to spend a few days in the state and you can see the highlights, and the many lakes of the area. Michigan might not be the tropical paradise you wanted, but it is the place that will help you to learn more about the unspoiled areas of the country.

Up to the North

One of the things many people don’t visit when they’re in Michigan is the Upper Peninsula. Because it’s certainly a drive up in the north, it’s something that many people skip, preferring to stay in the hip towns that are in the Lower Peninsula. But Mackinaw Island is something you shouldn’t miss – or the bridge between the two parts of the state. You can find a number of quiet little places to stay, where you can enjoy a quiet time by the water, just soaking up the stress free feelings of the area. Or you can drive up to Canada from Michigan and see what the border have to offer.

Down in the Hand

When you want to do more than just stare out at the water, you might want to look into the hip cities of Detroit and Ann Arbor. These two areas will give you plenty to do and plenty to see, even if you’re not really a big fan of big cities. Detroit is certainly going to offer you the more gritty of experiences, but you can also find a number of musical acts at the various music venues in the area. Or you might want to see one of the many Detroit teams that play in the city – basketball, baseball, etc. Ann Arbor is basically a college town for those who go to University of Michigan. This town has a hip style and attitude, with vegetarian restaurants and bohemian stores. You can walk the streets to learn about independent film showings, and you can just walk around the town to see what the college kids are doing.

The Great Lakes Experience

In addition, you might want to simply find a place on the shore of Michigan to help you soak up the sun and the water. Lake Erie is a little scary, so you might want to stay away from there (it did catch on fire once from all of the pollution in it). Lakes Michigan, Superior, and Huron are nice and you can find smaller beaches and state parks on them. Try booking a cottage on the shores over Fourth of July, for example, for a true taste of Americana.

Michigan is a place where you can find the meaning of peace and calm, without having to travel far.
